A lathe doesn’t just turn...
It also performs all kinds of milling operations, even heavy ones, as well as drilling at any angle, complete with chamfering and threading when needed. In short, imagine combining a lathe with a full machining center, and you get the turning center.
Bar turning offers several clear advantages: the part is securely held, since it remains integral with the bar until it is cut off; moreover, there are no issues of perpendicularity or parallelism, because the piece is machined “in the air,” not clamped by a chuck that might be slightly off-center. Finally, cutting is no longer a separate operation but an integral part of the turning process — and not necessarily the last one. With the sub-spindle, the part can be gripped again and machined further on the side opposite the main turning operation. And of course, it can still be milled, drilled, threaded…
